Mawozi Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Northeast Sichuan-Southwest Shaanxi. The Mawozi Fm was named by the No.3 Party of Regional Geological Survey, Sichuan Bureau of Geology in 1961. The type section is in Guanba-Majiaya, Nanjiang County, Sichuan Province. It is the lower formation of the Huodiya Gr.
Synonym: (麻窝子组)
Lithology and Thickness
In the typical section, the Mawozi Fm consists of five parts. Lower part is an interbedding of grey, grey-white metamorphosed conglomerate with quartz sandstone. Upward it is replaced by grey-white and grey thick-bedded siliceous-dolomitic marble (264 m thick). Lower-Middle part is composed of dark-grey biotite halleflinta (=a type of metamorphic rock, formed from volcanic tuff and rich in quartz and feldspars), grey- to greyish medium- to thick-bedded dolomitic marble and dolomite sandwiched with thin-bedded laminated dolomitic marble, carbonaceous slate and silty slate (1454 m thick). Middle-Middle part consists of purple quartz silty phyllite and siliceous chlorite schist; upward it is replaced by thick-bedded banded dolomitic marble (237 m thick). Upper-Middle part is purple calcareous slate and dark-grey slate; upward it is replaced by pale grey and grey-white thin-medium-thick-bedded muddy dolomitic marble intercalated with dolomitic crystalline limestone (583 m thick). Upper part has a metamorphosed conglomerate in the base, then consists of dark-grey carbonaceous slate, purple-red slate; upward there is medium- to thick-bedded dolomitic marble (645 m thick). The dolomites and dolomite marble both in lower-middle and upper-middle parts of the formation bear stromatolites.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It rests unconformably on the underlying Houhe Gr (Archean-Paleoproterozoic)
Upper contact
Northeast Sichuan-Southwest Shaanxi. The top is conformably(?) overlain by the Shangliang Fm (the upper formation of the Huodiya Gr).
Regional extent
It is widely distributed around Nanjiang and Wangcang, Sichuan Province. Beside these it is exposed also in Nanzheng and other places, Shaanxi Province.
